「サウスダウンズでコテージシェア」の経緯

グッド・オーメンズにおける公式のような集団幻覚のような「サウスダウンズでコテージシェア」の経緯をあらためてまとめてみました。
① 2005年、ニルゲ先生のブログで「クロウリーとアジラフェルの近況についてテリーと話した」という記事が投稿され、そこに「サウスダウンズ」という単語が出てくる。
Which probably bubbled into my mind because Terry Pratchett and I were talking about Crowley and Aziraphale over dinner the other night and wondering what they'd been up to ("...on the South Downs? You really think so?"). It was very pleasant, honestly, like catching up with news of old friends.
「先日、僕はテリー・プラチェットと夕食を共にしながら、クロウリーとアジラフェルは今頃どうしているだろうかということを話していた（「…サウスダウンズで？本気でそう思う？」）。それはまるで古くからの友人達の近況について話し合うみたいで、実際のところ、とても楽しかった。」

② 2006年、Wikipediaの情報が時としていかに事実と異なるかの一例として、ニルゲ先生がアジラフェルに関するwikiの一部をブログで引用（この箇所は現在wikiで削除済み）。
Also, Neil Gaiman mentioned in his blog that Aziraphale and Crowley are currently living in the South Downs. When he was asked in a book signing just what the two were doing there, he told that Aziraphale and Crowley were 'sharing a cottage'. It also got mentioned that Aziraphale watched porn, taking notes -- this quite suggests a certain kind of a relationship.
"（略）また、ニール・ゲイマンは自身のブログで、アジラフェルとクロウリーが現在サウスダウンズに住んでいることについて言及している。サイン会で2人がそこで何をしているのかと聞かれた彼は、アジラフェルとクロウリーが「コテージをシェアしている」と回答。さらにアジラフェルがポルノを見ながらメモを取っていたことにも触れ ― これは[クロウリーと]ある種の関係が示唆されている。（略）"
Which seems like a rather desperate attempt to make slash canon (which it isn't) by half-remembering http://www.neilgaiman.com/journal/2005/06/optimism-faith-english-breakfast.asp and then misunderstanding a reference to a running joke from the sequel to Good Omens we never wrote (which had Aziraphale trying to watch a complete soft-core porn movie in the hotels he was in across America in the free two-minute increments that he'd get when turning on the TV).

③ 2012年、ニルゲ先生のQ&Aでとあるファンが①のブログ記事について言及し、「サウスダウンズで何が起こっているんですか？」と質問。
回答の大半は小説続編について話したと振り返る内容だったが、最後の最後で「そうだな、あの二人がサウスダウンズでしているのはコテージシェアだ。次の方、質問どうぞ」と締めくくった、とそのファンがtumblrに投稿。このレポ以降、界隈で「サウスダウンズ＝コテージシェア」となり、関連のファンアートやファンフィクションが爆発的に増加。

④ 2020年、ツイッターでニルゲ先生がサウスダウンズ関連の質問に回答。
Q : why Aziraphale and Crowley wouldn't spend quarantine together? They don't share a cottage in the South Downs?
A : Not in the TV universe. Not yet.
Q：アジラフェルとクロウリーはロックダウンを一緒に過ごさないの？サウスダウンズでコテージシェアしてないの？
A：実写版の世界線ではね。まだだ。
Q : so they do share a cottage in the book universe?
A : That's a hard one to say. The South Downs cottage is what happens in the book universe after the second book (which we plotted but never wrote) is over. The question is whether that's happened yet or not.
Q：つまり原作ではシェアしてるってこと？
A：それに答えるのは難しい。サウスダウンズのコテージの件は、原作の世界線の（僕達が構想を練ったが終ぞ書かれなかった）続編後に起こることだ。問題はそれがもう起こったのか起こってないのかということになる。
